This position is responsible for the daily operations of the Tunnell Cancer Center pharmacy and the management of pharmacy personnel. This position requires clinical knowledge and involvement in the improvement of cancer care while fostering relationships with medical and nursing staff. All members of the Leadership Team who need to use a phone for business purposes must use a personal cell phone.
5 years Major healthcare Experience; 3 years Supervisory Experience preferred
BS in Pharmacy
Delaware Pharmacy License
Board Certification in Oncology preferred
Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Participates on committees and assures patient safety through review of processes in assigned areas as evidenced by lack of errors or events. Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees as evidenced by meeting minutes. Facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective medication use issues in collaboration with the medical staff. Supports the pharmacy's pharmacoeconomic efforts and targeted compliance programs as evidenced by intervention reports. Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners and patients. Suggests appropriate, cost effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed as evidenced by intervention reports. Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, adverse drug reactions and appropriateness of drug and dose as evidenced by event reports. Maintain control of the budget by monitoring daily spending and documenting variances. Be able to speak to the variations in the budget and actions taken to stay on target. Performs the duties of a supervisor including schedule development, completing staff annual evaluations, participates in hiring decisions. Provides staff counseling and initiates discipline process when necessary. Produces work schedule for employees within their section as evidenced by posted schedule. Conducts interviews of new candidates & recommends action or not for hiring applicant based on completion of interview documentation. Acts as a liaison for other department, medical sections and patients regarding pharmaceutical care issues. Provides accurate and timely drug information to the professional staff and educate pharmacy staff as needed. Develop performance improvement initiatives and monitor their progress to improve patient care and/or department efficiency. Maintain external research protocols and provides staff education as evidenced by written protocols and staff meeting documentation. Provide education to patient as needed and maintain up to date profiles ensuring accurate and timely medication reconciliation. Serves as preceptor for the pharmacy clerkships and other educational activities. Serves as preceptor and rotation coordinator for pharmacy students as evidenced by student evaluation documentation. Provides training and education to pharmacists regarding pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomics. Supervises and instructs pharmacists and performs competence assessment as documented in training and attendance logs. Identifies education needs for the staff as evidenced by development of competency tools. Has the ability to assume staffing responsibilities in the role of a pharmacist to assure smooth operations of the pharmacy. Performs all the functions and duties of the pharmacists as evidenced by meeting the pharmacist's competency.
