Distribution Manager


The Distribution Center Manager is responsible for the efficient operations of the distribution center(s) or 3PL relationship. Determines layout and flow using lean manufacturing and supply chain best practices. In additions, manages all freight relationships, use and costs. Ensures perfect delivery (On time, complete and accurate) order within agreed lead times and service. Reports to VP of Operations.


Job Functions: 

  • Determines best layout of the facility for most efficient operation with respect to the 7 wastes of lean

  • Efficiently manages labor – especially the picking and packing using standard work/spaghetti diagrams and other tools

  • Continuous Improvement leader for distribution and freight

  • Reduces likelihood of accidents or other safety concerns to achieve zero tolerance

  • Analyzes shipments frequently to assure best cost routing, consolidation, appropriate packaging and makes recommendation to Sales/Marketing/Finance on how to improve

  • Creates, maintains and compliance of freight and other service polices

  • Looks for improvement in total cycle time and maintains stable service metrics

  • Uses methods and processes like A3 and other lean tools

  • Communicates internally with team and with other departments of the company on any changes or issues.

  • Executes company handbook policies fairly and justly. Creates high morale but in a disciplined workplace environment

  • Sets goals for every team member and themselves

  • Meets or exceeds budget

  • Identifies need for, designs, and ensures implementation of inventory controls ensuring adequate material availability to support sales and meets agreed customer requirements

  • Challenges all non-value added work and any new requirement where cost is being added but not revenue

  • Operates Distribution within and exceeds professional standards and benchmarks

  • Participates in annual budget process and monitors and analyzes monthly budget performance

  • Remains aware of industry trends and is responsible for the efficient operation of Supply Distribution within budgetary constraints

  • Interviews, hires, schedules, assigns work to and evaluates work performance of employees directly supervised.

  • Sets inventory levels with supply chain, purchasing and manufacturing (pull system) to achieve a 98% or higher delivery

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Industrial Engineer or related


Work Experience: 10 years of experience with significant portion supplying retail, Ability to analyze data to determine best locations and velocity, 3PL experience (Make vs. Buy), Lean Manufacturing Experience, Led or participated in freight reduction programs/policy creation, Managed at least 250,000 sq. feet or larger, Global Supply chain experience (Receiving product), Internet Shipment Knowledge ( Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s etc)


Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Word and Excel


Organizational Skills: Ability to handle multiple priorities efficiently and effectively


Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively across a diverse customer-base; good verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills with ability to deal with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the organization
